Personal skills for Git checkouts with local host links

Install

npm install @meganemura/stow

stow keeps personal skills for a Git checkout outside that checkout. You keep the skills in your own GitHub repository, with one <owner>/<repo>/ directory for each target repository. stow links them into the project skill paths that coding agents discover, so the other repository never holds your overlay. It reads the target’s identity from its GitHub-style origin URL, and --repo OWNER/REPO sets it when the remote is missing or different.

  • One overlay per repository. skillsDir in ~/.stow/config.json points at your skills checkout. stow path prints the overlay of the current repository.
  • Links for many hosts. stow init --agents codex,claude-code,cursor selects the hosts. Claude Code reads .claude/skills/<name>, and Codex, Cursor, Antigravity, pi, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, and Devin Desktop share .agents/skills/<name>.
  • Adopt a generated skill. stow adopt .agents/skills/my-skill copies the skill into the overlay and replaces the original directory with a symlink. stow add /path/to/skill copies a skill from elsewhere, and --link links it instead.
  • Nothing reaches git. stow adds exact info/exclude patterns for its links, so git status and git add omit them. It refuses a tracked skill, because exclusions apply only to untracked files.
  • Restore on another machine. After you pull your skills repository, run stow in the target checkout. With no command, it runs sync and updates the links. stow remove my-skill deletes the entry and its links.
  • Setup through an agent. stow agent-instructions prints a setup guide and the current config state, and changes no files.

In a host with shell shortcuts, run !stow agent-instructions, or !npx --yes @meganemura/stow agent-instructions without a global install. The agent follows the printed guide to configure its host, explain the storage, and suggest a useful personal skill. It asks whether you want to create a skill, adopt an existing one, or skip. After setup, agents read the skills under stow path for the repository. stow does not clone, commit, pull, or push your skills repository. You commit skill changes there with your usual Git workflow.

stow needs Node.js 20 or later.
